Amazon set another annual record in holiday sales this year, with more customers than ever before. In each step of the customer journey, no time is wasted and shoppers are immediately given what they want. They strive to make things as seamless, easy, and instantly gratifying as possible.

At a time when most companies are still sending out email blasts oh how we love that termAmazon has developed an extremely refined email strategy. These messages get Amazon account holders accustomed to the site and all of its services, which leads them—generally speaking—to continue purchasing. Amazon pioneered highly personalized product recommendation emails based on, well, everything: purchase history, past order value, location, age, gender, and on-site browsing.

While some retail sites do personalize recommendations, I get dozens of promotional emails daily, from well-funded startups to established and successful companies, and I rarely see those sorts of messages. Take the example below. I had purchased two yoga mat towels on Amazon, and then received this message recommending that I purchase two more yoga mat towels.

An Amazon email suggests products based on purchase and browsing history. Of course, Amazon is also a pioneer here. They were one of the first companies to even put a review system on their site, way back in Now, of course, reviews and ratings are quite common on e-commerce sites all over the world, and with good reason.

While many companies send emails asking for reviews, most bundle their requests all together.

Marketing Mix: The 4Ps Of Marketing For Businesses

Amazon, meanwhile, will send out different emails for different products, even when you purchased everything at the same time. The examples below from Amazon and the Gap illustrate this. This email from the Gap asks the shopper about multiple products at once. The last one I wrote was motivated purely by a negative experience with a product. Review writers could be entered into raffles, with each approved review up until a certain point counting towards an extra entry.

Reviewers could alternatively earn a small discount for their work, or even just get coupons for certain products.By Laia Cardonaon 02 November While having dozens of platforms and mediums to spread the word provides something for everyone, sometimes less is more. And sticking to formulas, like the 4P marketing mixthat are seemingly evergreen, can create some much needed clarity in a crowded space.

These decisions need to take into account countless variables and still reliably hit the mark. They are product, place, price and promotion. So what exactly are the 4 ps of marketing and how can we use them now?

So often we tend to focus on technical aspects of what we offer, such as features and materials used. What problem s does your product solve? How does your service make their lives easier or better?

Packaging, branding and creating a sense of perceived value also fall under this P of the marketing mix. The 2nd P is all about how you get your product or service in front of potential customers.

This distribution strategy also includes any brick and mortar locations, resellers and affiliates. Making it as easy as possible for your potential customers to access your product is essential. That could mean remarketing after initial interest is shown. Logistics such as storage, inventory management and deliveries are covered in the 2nd P. A series of both internal and external factors come into play:.

All of these determinants combine to create a pricing point that helps companies reach their targets. In the end, however, it all comes down to what a customer is willing to pay.

In essence we want to share as many of the benefits and selling points as possible. Marketing, direct sales, branding, product or industry specific education, public relations, use of third party validation, networking events—these are all under the umbrella of promotion. And they should all send a cohesive, fine tuned message that shows consistency. It takes time, testing and a lot of fine tuning to find what works.

Regardless, these four ps of marketing are tried and true in terms of addressing fundamentals. Have you applied them to your marketing strategy yet?

Marketing strategy, altogether its diverse complexity, is often boiled right down to a couple of core principles. This was used in earlier days of marketing strategies. It is one of the famous concepts which deeply describes the marketing mix with the help of four-pillar which are product, price, place, and promotion.

Both questions have the same answer. The concept of the marketing mix was introduced by McCarthy in one of his famous book named Basic Marketing. Sales in nothing but mostly price in negotiation standards with great returns. If the price is cheap it doubts the quality and if the price is high it indicates some brand. It not only determines the monetary value of the sale, but it also sets expectations regarding quality, demand, and market position.

Though it refers to some physical and tangible product we are here to describe a product which can be or for that matter can be intangible. These are service-based intangibles that augment the core product to form a package. It can also be a product such as a soft drink or beverage industry or any dress or clothing store.

This covers how is the product is sold. It sets expectations of when, where, and how does the item need to be sold. Promotion for that matter explains the way how does a brand communicates with the customer and sets standards into the market which covers all the entire sales and not just promoting to end-users. Now you might have a fair clarity on why is the marketing mix important? The profit-making process which is also called return on investment is more likely to be considered in this process.

A perfect example of a marketing mix is related to the story of Motorola. It is basically the solution that needs to be provided for the customer related to their concerns rather than focusing on the product.

The principle of AIDA does not really work here, as there must be a direct channel of understanding customer problems and hearing them along with solving their concerns. With the help of this strategy, we can engage more with the customer rather than using a door-to-door process which was used in the traditional way with easy accessibly to the brand or product.

This considers making an online platform, selling products and services on it, and getting the maximum value out of the medium. It is more related to sales and getting more return on investment.

We should always consider the less tangible product returns. The main objectives are very simple in context with the older standards of saving time and money.

It also indulges in accessing the new market standards with understanding customer needs and wants. The modernized thinking is related to pushing messages, it is more about conversations happening and understanding the customer pain points.

The terminology for this is content marketing which enables the function to simply tweet and promote products with understanding the marketing strategies along with understanding customer behavior. The main importance of the marketing mix is that it helps understand well the product and service which is to offer to the customer for sales. It also helps strategized in a better manner how to offer the product or service. It also helps a great deal in planning and implementing marketing strategies.

Interested to learn all about Product Management from the best minds in the industry?Marketing is a continually evolving discipline and as such can be one that companies find themselves left very much behind the competition if they stand still for too long.

One example of this evolution has been the fundamental changes to the basic Marketing mix. Where once there were 4 Ps to explain the mix, nowadays it is more commonly accepted that a more developed 7 Ps adds a much needed additional layer of depth to the Marketing Mix with some theorists going even going further.

Before we get carried away though what is the Marketing Mix and what is the original 4 Ps principle? The Marketing Mix.

Marketing Theories – The Marketing Mix – From 4 Ps to 7 Ps

Simply put the Marketing Mix is a tool used by businesses and Marketers to help determine a product or brands offering. The 4 Ps have been associated with the Marketing Mix since their creation by E. Jerome McCarthy in You can see why there may have been some need to update the theory. This now allowed the extended Marketing Mix to include products that are services and not just physical things.

In some spheres of thinking, there are 8 Ps in the Marketing Mix.

The final P is Productivity and Quality. This came from the old Services Marketing Mix and is folded in to the Extended Marketing Mix by some marketers so what does it mean?

A good marketer will learn to adapt the theory to fit with not only modern times but their individual business model. Watch the recording for the Marketing Mix to see CIM tutor, Professional Academy trainer and all-round marketing pro Peter Sumpton talk about the model and how it can be used in practice. The concept of marketing remains the same but the marketing mix, or combination of factors that influence the delivery of value, has evolved considerably.

The traditional marketing mix, built around the 4Ps — product, price, place and promotion — arguably discounts the breadth and complexity of current-day marketing. Therefore, two Ps were added to the mix — process and people — which respond to crucial changes in customer service, e-commerce and social media.

Product encompasses the variety, design, packaging, quality, features and positioning of a product or service. The emphasis on this "P" is constantly growing as consumers are becoming more knowledgeable about, and critical of, their purchases. Also, there is added stress on solutions in response to more complex market expectations.

For example, return policies and warranties are becoming extremely important at a time when your competitors are a Google search away. Simply put, price refers to how much a customer is willing to pay for a product or service. Pricing strategies are becoming more dynamic to keep up with highly educated consumers. For instance, discounting strategies could be permanently anchored in the minds of consumers, who may refuse to pay retail prices later.

The advancement in technology has allowed manufacturers to cut out retailers and sell directly to consumers. All of these changes underscore the need to clearly communicate value based on the positioning chosen for the product. Place refers to product accessibility to potential customers. The key factor is understanding a target audience, which will help a marketing specialist position the product in the channel that is most accessible to potential buyers.

This "P" recently evolved with the introduction of e-commerce. Deciding whether or not to sell a product on a website could significantly affect your relationship with distributors. Promotion is the most visible "P," as it includes advertising, sales promotions and PR efforts. Students understand this even better than I do because they are digital natives. In addition to these traditional elements, new developments in the marketplace have added two vital layers for marketers to integrate into the marketing mix: process and people.

Automation, systems and processes now play a critical role in the marketing mix.

They reduce cost while also playing an integral role in achieving customer satisfaction and measuring results. Worstall claims that the "fierce focus on efficiency and cost has meant that the company can continue to offer lower prices than its rivals.

Companies need to hire and train the right people to provide superior and consistent customer service. Employees need to be trained on customer habits and behaviors that humanize consumers using customer personas. The primary messaging and competitive advantage is also important to communicate in order to ensure that the voice of the company stands united. A diverse, goal-oriented and motivated workforce is the scarcest and most important advantage a company can have.

Companies cannot afford to underestimate the value of company-minded team members. Theories of seven or eight Ps also ring true to certain applications. Other marketers argue that the original mix is still as applicable as it ever was.

Marketing-mix components can be viewed as elements that make up a car. In the s, when the marketing mix debuted, all cars had wheels, an engine, etc.
